Hairy Arnica

Arnica mollis

Asteraceae (Sunflower Family)



Description: Also known as Cordilleran Arnica, this perennial herb grows to a mature height of between ten inches and two feet. The leaves are lance-shaped to elliptic and the stems are covered with tiny hairs. The flower heads are about two inches across and made up of nine to eighteen ray flowers surrounding a cluster of disk flowers.

Habitat: Found throughout western North America from Alaska to Colorado, including the northern two-thirds of California, at elevations between 6000 and 11,500 feet. This plant grows in damp grassy meadows and streambanks.

Flowering Season: Flowers form from July to September.

Comments: Spreads through use of rhizomes and may form large colonies.
