Blue Columbine

Aquilegia coerulea

Ranunculaceae (Buttercup Family)



Description: This herbaceious perennial is also known as Colorado Columbine. It grows to a mature height of up to two feet. Leaves are mostly basal and deeply lobed. Flowers have five sepals and five petals and the petals each have a nectar spur. The sepals and the petals vary independently in color from blue to white. Numerous yellow stamens and five pistils protude from the center of the flower.

Habitat: This plant is found in the Rocky Mountains from Idaho and Montana down to New Mexico at elevations between 6000 and 12000 feet. This plant prefers moist locations.

Flowering Season: Flowers form from June to August.

Comments: Blue Columbine is the state flower of Colorado. This plant is sometimes included as a member of the Hellebore Family (Helleboraceae).
