Bog Orchid

Platanthera dilatata

Orchidaceae (Orchid Family)



Description: This perennial herb is also known as White Rein-Orchid, Bog Candle, and Scentbottle. It grows to a height of up to two feet. The white flowers form along the top of the stalk. The leaves are alternate, lance-shaped, and they clasp the stem.

Habitat: Found throughout western North America at elevations up to 11500 feet. This plant grows near water sources such as meadows, streambanks, and bogs.

Flowering Season: Flowers form from June to August.

Comments: This plant may also be listed as P. leucostachys or in the genus Habenaria or the genus Limnorchis.
