Owl's Claws

Hymenoxys hoopesii

Asteraceae (Sunflower Family)



Description: Also known as Orange Sneezeweed, this perennial herb grows to a mature height of up to three feet. Leaves are three to six inches long with a prominent, almost white central vein. Upper leaves are linear to lanceolate and lower leaves are similar, but more rounded. Flower heads consist of fourteen to twenty-six ray flowers, which range in color from yellow to orange, surrounding a mound of disk flowers.

Habitat: This plant grows throughout most of the western states except Washington in moist areas at elevations between 7500 and 11300 feet.

Flowering Season: Flowers form from March to November.

Comments: This plant may also be listed as Dugaldia hoopesii or Helenium hoopesii.
